Langeveldt was originally left out the ODI squad, this could be seen as one of ‘those’ decisions that represents the breakdown between Cricket South Africa and Mickey Arthur’s ‘vision’ and structure.

It was reported that between Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Wayne Parnell they have played only 67 matches, where Charl Langeveldt has played 64 ODI games. Langeveldt has also been selected with a view towards the ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies and then next year’s ICC World Cup.

Langeveldt will have to pick up his game before he heads to India, this figures of 3 overs for 45 runs against the Titans in the Standard Bank Pro20, on Sunday evening were not the most inspiring. He did however demolish the Lions in the previous game, taking 3 wickets from 4 overs for just 18 runs, but that was against the Lions……

ODI squad: Graeme Smith, Loots Bosman, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Charl Langeveldt, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Roelof van der Merwe.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday named a provisional squad of 20 players for the ICC Champions Trophy tournament to be held in South Africa in September.

The squad will be reduced to a final squad of 15 closer to the start of the tournament.

The squad consists of the 15 players who did duty in the ICC World Twenty20 in England in June plus, Hashim Amla, Charl Langeveldt, Makhaya Ntini, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Vaughn van Jaarsveld.

“It is a very good squad and it will be quite difficult to reduce it to the final 15,” commented selection convener Mike Procter. “Charl Langeveldt is no longer a Kolpak player and is again available for selection. He has recently undergone shoulder surgery and we will have to see how well he comes through that.

“The news on Graeme Smith’s elbow surgery is extremely positive at this stage while Lonwabo Tsotsobe has made a good recovery from the knee surgery he had earlier in the year. We will be able to monitor his form as well as that of Vaughn van Jaarsveld on the Emerging Tour of Australia later this month.

“Hashim Amla, Herschelle Gibbs and Wayne Parnell are all playing county cricket at present but will return home in good time to prepare for the tournament.”

Proteas’ Standard Bank ODI squad: Graeme Smith (Nashua Cape Cobras, capt), Johan Botha (Chevrolet Warriors, vice-capt), Yusuf Abdulla (Nashua Dolphins), Hashim Amla (Nashua Dolphins), Mark Boucher (Chevrolet Warriors), AB de Villiers (Nashua Titans), JP Duminy (Nashua Cape Cobras), Herschelle Gibbs (Nashua Cape Cobras), Jacques Kallis (Chevrolet Warriors), Charl Langeveldt (Nashua Cape Cobras), Albie Morkel (Nashua Titans), Morne Morkel (Nashua Titans), Makhaya Ntini (Chevrolet Warriors), Justin Ontong (Nashua Cape Cobras), Wayne Parnell (Chevrolet Warriors), Robbie Peterson (Nashua Cape Cobras), Dale Steyn (Nashua Titans), Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Chevrolet Warriors), Roelof van der Merwe (Nashua Titans), Vaughn van Jaarsveld (bizhub Highveld Lions).

After they demolished the Nashua Titans on Sunday in Cape Town, the Cape Cobras almost ended both Highveld sides’ Pro20 championship in one week. The Lions fought back hard to force a draw at Senwes Park.

Even the relentless rain this week didn’t dampen the spirits of the students in Potchefstroom. War-cries shook the stadium and the dancing girls got a work-out due to a good tally of boundaries.

The Lions won the toss and elected to field. Andrew Puttick got the game off to classic Standard Bank Pro20 style with a four off the first ball, but was sent home on the next ball he faced when Craig Alexander impressed on debut by bowling him out.

Herschelle Gibbs & JP Duminy looked like they were going to make an imposing batting pair but Andre Nel ended Gibbs’ innings with a classic catch.
Justin Ontong replaced Gibbs and settled the Cobras nicely, proving his worth yet again. Duminy fell 3rd when he was caught in the 17th over for 56 runs.
After a few more wickets tumbled, Levi and his team finished their innings on a respectable score of 154/6.

The Lions set out to chase that total on what was generally considered a batting wicket. They came close but they just couldn’t do it.

In the second innings, the Lions started off well but the game stagnated after Bula was bowled out for 19.
Neil McKenzie did manage a respectable 35 but Alviro Petersen was their stalwart, holding on to the last over before getting caught on 61 runs.

Individual performances characterized the 2nd innings: Rory Kleinveldt had a poor game, dropping a catch and getting knocked all over the park by Petersen, Roger Telemachus failed to recreate the magic of his last game and helped the Lions add to their final total and Vaughn van Jaarsveld celebrated his birthday with a Mohawk hard hat cake and 25 runs.

Thanks to Charl Langeveldt’s brilliant last over, taking 2 wickets off the last two balls, The two sides drew.

The next game is on Friday where the Titans will try to salvage some pride against the Eagles at SuperSport Park.
