South African International T20 team from yesteryear
On the back of the poor performance of the current Proteas team in the ICC World T20 and the negative media back lash, I though it would be a good idea to select a South African T20 dream team of players who retired before T20 cricket came of age.
As my regular readers will know I love twitter, it gives me the opportunity to discuss cricket events as they happen. I asked my followers who they would include in this team, and this is what came of it, perhaps these guys should be selecting the current T20 team as well:
In batting order:
- Gary Kirsten (batsman) – Suggested by @SACricketBlog
- Daryl Cullinan (batsman) – Suggested by @MrTruckBox
- Jonty Rhodes (batsman) – Suggested by @StdBankCricket
- 4. Hansie Cronje (all rounder) – Suggested by @Slbry
- Lance Klusner (all rounder) – Suggested by @Spursgirl
- Dave Callaghan (all rounder) – Suggested by @MrTruckBox
- Dave Richardson (Keeper) – Suggested by @StdBankCricket
- Richard Snell (all rounder) – Suggested by @SACricketBlog
- Pat Symcox (spin bowler) – Suggested by @PhillipGibb
- Brian McMillan (all rounder) – Suggested by @SnowGooseSA
- Meyrick Pringle (pace bowler) – Suggested by @Leeontwitta
- Fanie de Villiers (pace power) – Suggested by @SanjeebCNNIBN
- Clive Rice (all rounder) – Suggested by @GarryThomson
- Adrain Kuiper (batsman) – Suggested by @SACricketBlog
Not a bad squad at all, it’s got some big hitters in Klusner, Callaghan, Snell and Kuiper. We’ve got our spin bowler in Symcox and in T20 cricket the key to bowling is taking the pace off the ball, can you imagine how successful Hansie Cronje and Brian McMillan would have been as a bowlers in T20?
And of course Hansie would be our captain.
Some players who missed out on our team; Clive Eksteen, Nic Pothas, Peter Kirsten and Allan Donald. Who would you have included in our T20 Squad?

no mike proctor?
no barry richards?
no pollocks?
Garth Le Roux for the bounce he generated. I reckon Mike Proctor would have been destructive with both bat and ball. Can’t agree that Clive Eksteen would even be suggested as someone who just missed out. He battled to maintain a spot in the ODI’s and would no doubt have been targeted over 4 overs. A captain of a provincial squad? Can’t argue with that. Pat Symcox is a great choice. Absolute team player and dependable in tight situations. I’m glad to see Richard Snell made the squad. Hansie? Still miss the Skip …
Can someone out there confirm the following buzz going around the cricket world that the South African Cricket team is going to re-locate to the Phillipines and adopt a new name – the Manila Folders”
SHAUN POLLOCK. Seriously?
Others that might have been considered:
Paul Adams
Derek Crookes
Steve Elworthy
Andrew Hall (I know he’s still playing)
Okay, so i may have read this in a sleepy state.
Pollock *might* have played one or two T20s. Meh. But still.
I believe Pollock started his T20 career in 2002 and played his last game in the 2008/9 season. Andrew Hall? Boytjie. Top fighter, reliable, talented, under appreciated.
@Blindcripple yeah Shaun Pollock would make any team I was involved with but we’ve seen him play T20.
I like your call on Steve Elworthy.
@Craig Nuttley I’ve forgiven Hansie, he’s still my captain oh captain.
@Shaun Custers The best South Africa has seen and may see for a while. But let’s not venture away from the thread. Polly would definately be in my squad too, probably any world side I’d. Same applies to Brian McMillan. Explosive!
Still you guys are going to choke lol
@Kevin All well and good. Perhaps you’d like to take your discussion to another forum which is dealing with that particular thread? However, it is, in my OPINION, a hugely debatable and false impression that South Africa are ‘chokers’ as such. Let us this forum know where you start the debate so we can all attend.
