Clive Rice, the paranoid schizophrenic

I haven’t written at all about the recent spot-fixing controversy surrounding the Pakistan cricket players, purely because this blog is about SA Cricket and the shenanigans have had nothing to do with our players. Clive Rice on the other hand, has managed to attract the attention of the international cricket media with some paranoid schizophrenic statements.

In an interview with News of the World, yes – the same News of the World that broke the Pakistan spot-fixing story, Clive Rice said: “On the same day (as Woolmer’s death) Pakistan had just lost to Ireland in the World Cup, and you say ‘well, had Bob found something out’ because clearly if it’s carrying on now and it was going on then … Had he found something out? I’m pretty sure he had.”

Wow, what a revelation Clive, Pakistan lost to Ireland, we didn’t notice until now. Had he found something out? Come on it was three years ago, why do you only bring this up now?

Rice then went on to say that Hansie Cronje was also “taken out” because he was about to reveal  details of match-fixing in cricket. Never mind the investigation that was undertaken on the aeroplane crash that concluded that it was pilot error that resulted in the accident.

I find it repulsive that Clive Rice can draw the attention of the media to his speculative statements, you should be embarrassed Clive. How convenient the timing of his statements on the eve of the Champions League Twenty20?

  1. Mmmm … I didn’t hear the News of the World interview, so I can’t comment on that. Even so, I can’t agree with you on this one Shaun. I usually do.
Clive Rice also had an interview with John Robbie on Talk Radio 702 on Thursday. He expressed during that interview why he hadn’t come out with certain stuff back then.

Paranoid Schizophrenic statements. wow! That shows both an ignorant view of what Scizophrenia is and what paranoia is Shaun. Even so, we all know that there are sinister things going in cricket in certain areas of the world. It appears now to be even more corrupt than we’d ever expected. Clive Rice would have much reason to be paranoid (Schizphrenic? Nah! Not Clive)if there is – and we now know this to be true – much more to match and “spot fixing” than meets the eye.

On 702 Ricey referred to possibilities of Hansies Death being set up. I don’t recall him saying it was. There is huge money involved in cricket in all forms of the game. How can you, or I, know the extremes these evils of the game have reached. The match fixing saga with Hansie did not really go ahead internationally as it should have and it certainly did not weed out the evil.
I think you’re being too hard on a South African cricketing icon who may at times be a little too straight in voicing his opinion, but didn’t you always love that about Captain Clive Rice … He, Fanie De Villiers and Pat Symcox … some of the straightest talkers in the game. You shared you opinion, I hope you’ll allow me to share mine. You rock Ricey!

Hey Craig, thanks for the comments, all opinions are welcome here.

I only manged to get to 4th year in my psychology degree so I might have got my definitions a little mixed up, however CSI Rice (Crime Scene Investigator) who I’m sure has spent many hours training with Horation made some far fetched statements.

I do agree that spot/match fixing needs to be eradicated, but making unsubstantiated claims in the media does nothing to help the process.

  3. Hey Shaun. I didn’t do a day studying psychology. You couldn’t have been a very focused student :-) I’m still not convinced Clive Rice made “claims” as such, but if he did, so be it. Maybe it will draw attention to a problem which you agree needs to be fixed. Toward that aim and toward restoring integrity to the gentleman’s game on the field and in the bookies office, perhaps this is a little bit of what is required. It’s dirty, it’s just not sport and it’s making criminals out of cricketers, They’re ripping off, not only the guys who place their bets (quite legally) only to be thwarted by these … bad sports. You may also remember that when Woolmers death was probed initially, it was found or suggested that there was foul play. Did money turn that particular train of thought … and if so, could money not have bought a an accident in hansies case? has Samora Machel’s death ever really been properly concluded. I’m not sure, but it doesn’t take much to mess around with flight instruments and panels from the ground. I still think Ricey has every reason to suggest what he has suggested … and perhaps world cricket would do well to take an indepth view and scrutinize cricket from the floor up.

  4. I meant to add to the above that they’re (the scum of cricket) not only ripping off honest betters, but tickets buyers and supporters who wish to see a fair game. Also, having suggested what he has suggested on the eve of the T20 Championship might have helped a few cricketers to keep it honest. Who know’s, as mentioned before, just how deep and widespread this is.
