Pro20 News

Standard Bank Pro20

In this weeks Pro20 update, we have a captain falling, opening batsmen scoring runs and the IPL muscling in on domestic cricket in South Africa.

This last weekends Pro20 results:

Friday 5th, Cape Cobras beat the Highveld Lions by 42 runs

Sunday 7th, Titans beat the Cape Cobras by 17 runs (D/L shortened game)

Sunday 7th, Warriors beat the Dolphins by 23 runs

note: So far in the Standard Bank Pro20 the team batting first has won every game

Neil McKenzie gets the sack

News of the day is that Highveld Lions captain Neil McKenzie has been relieved of his duties as captain, but will stay on as a senior player in the team. McKenzie has been the captain of the Lions since 2004, and truth be told the Lions have not done well for a long time now. The Lions have announced that Alviro Petersen will captain the team upon his return from India, in the mean time wicket keeper Thami Tsolekile will lead the team. I would suggest that the newly appoint coach of The Lions, Dave Nosworthy, is building a new team and new leadership from within.

IPL Muscles in on domestic cricket

Earlier in the year Shane Warne mentioned that this was going to be a massive year for him, and he now seems to have shown his hand, it was announced that the IPL team The Rajasthan Royals that Warne captained, had struck a deal where the following teams; Hampshire, Cape Cobras and Trinidad and Tobago along with a yet-to-be-confirmed Australia state team, would form an international Twenty20 (Pro20) brand. Each team will now play under the Royals name.

I’m not too keen on this idea, why does one of South Africa’s leading domestic teams need to be influenced by and IPL team? This move seems to cement the notion of big money taking over cricket, it’s now on our door step, the IPL is having a direct influence on our domestic game. More to follow on this story….

Gulam Bodi gets player of the week

Titans opening batsman is my choice for Pro20 player of the week. Bodi hit an impressive 88* runs of just 44 balls in his innings against The Cobras at SuperSport park. His innings included six 6’s and seven 4’s. Bodi would have had the chance to have made is maiden Pro20 century had it not been for a reduced innings due to rain.

Change of Venue:

Cricket South Africa has announced that the Standard Bank Pro20 match between the Nashua Titans and the bizhub Highveld Lions, due to be played on Wednesday, 10 February 2010, has been moved from Willowmoore Park in Benoni, to SuperSport Park in Centurion, because of a waterlogged field. This is great news for the Titans, Willowmore Park is a grave yard for Titans cricket.

David Miller

During the opening game of the Standard Bank Pro20 2010 between Nashua Dolphins and the Nashua Titans, David Millier caught the eye of a few spectators. Miller scored a quick 30 off 23 balls, before rain stopped play, Dean Oelschig asked me via Twitter what I knew about him. With my endeavour to answer your every question I went online to see what I could find.

Full name: David Andrew Miller

Born: June 10, 1989, Pietermaritzburg, Natal

Major teams: Dolphins, KwaZulu-Natal Inland Under-19s, South African Schools

Batting style: Left-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm offbreak

Miller is more a batsman than he is a bowler, he’s currently got a first call batting average of 29.84 with a highest score of 108*. In the recent MTN40 Miller 367 runs, in 11 innings at an average of 36.70, his highest score was 85*.

Having made his first call debut in the 07/08 season, Miller is still young and seems to be a player to watch for the future.

Pro20 : Lions lose Malinga

The Highveld Lions announced last week that the Sri Lankan Cricket Board had withdrawn fast bowler Lasith Malinga from the Standard Bank Pro series, due to injury and conditioning concerns.

The Lions are going to miss the services of Malinga, the Lions finished last on the MTN40 log having won only three games. Last year the Lions also finished last on the Pro20 Log, without a winning a game.

To make matters worse, the Lions have three of their front line bowlers sitting on the bench injured: Andre Nel, Craig Alexander and Friedel de Wet.

Pro20 Cricket

Standard Bank Pro20

Twenty20 (T20) cricket was first introduced by England in the 2003 season, which was played as a domestic inter-county competition. Following the success of the inter-county Twenty20 series, Cricket South Africa introduced Pro20 Cricket in the 2003/4 season with Standard Bank as the main sponsor.

Pro20 Cricket has brought back the crowds to domestic cricket in South Africa. There is almost no support from the public in the longer formats of domestic cricket, the MTN40 only draws crowds towards the end of the series, when the Protea players return and the SuperSport series, although extremely important to the national teams test ambitions never draws the crowds. However games in the Standard Bank Pro20 are regularly sold old, with or without Protea players.

The previous winners of the Standard Bank Pro20:

  • 2003-04 Gestetner Diamond Eagles
  • 2004-05 Nashua Titans
  • 2005-06 Gestetner Diamond Eagles
  • 2006-07 Highveld Lions
  • 2007-08 Nashua Titans
  • 2008-09 Nashua Cape Cobras
